How to check the storage on your iPhone

Your iPhone may be full of things you don’t really need after a manner of time. However, they take up a lot of your phone storage than you think. Before deciding to clear anything valuable, it’s important to find out what they actually are. Here’s how to check and manage storage on your iPhone:

1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
2. At the top, you’ll see a color-coded bar showing how much space you have left, how much is taken up, and what’s taking it up. As below, we can see that the biggest contents taken up are Photos and Apps.

Find out Content categories in iPhone storage

The used content on your device is divided into these categories:

  • Apps: Including installed apps and their content.
  • Photos: Photos and videos stored in the Photos app.
  • Media: Music, videos, podcasts, ringtones, artwork, and Voice Memos.
  • Mail & Messages: Emails, Messages and their attachments.
  • Apple Books: Books and PDFs in the Books app.
  • iCloud Drive: iCloud Drive content that has been downloaded locally to your device.
  • System: Space taken by the operating system. This can vary based on your device and model.
  • Other: These are the default apps that are non-removable mobile assets, such as Siri voices, fonts, dictionaries, cookies and caches, and system data, such as Keychain and CloudKit Database, etc.

How to optimize and free up your iPhone storage full

Your iPhone may automatically free up space while installing an app, upgrading iOS, or downloading music, among other things, to make more storage accessible. It may also erase items that may be downloaded again or are no longer needed. Your device also deletes temporary files and clears the cache.

If it can’t free up space due to your iPhone storage full, it will send you a Storage Almost Full alert. After showing this alert, you are given the storage recommendations or offload some unused content like apps, photos or messages. To optimize your storage:

1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
2. Below the code bar, you might see a list of recommendations for optimizing your device’s storage. Tap Show All to see all the recommendations for your device.
3. Here you can read the description of the recommendations to follow or not to erase your content.

To actively free up the space without losing your favorite content, find out detailed guides for different content to do it below.

Tap “Recover” in the bottom right of the screen. A pop-up will open to get your confirmation. Select “Recover [number of] Messages” to confirm the retrieval. After this action, the conversation will be sent back to “All Messages” right in the original position you deleted it.

Remove non-essential apps

If you want to clear out the cache of an app, you have two options to delete or offload the app. Deleting and reinstalling an app will clear the cache data it has stored. Otherwise, you can offload the app to keep all your settings and data intact.

This is how to delete or offload an app from your phone:

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
3. Select any of the apps from the list you want and tap Offload App or Delete App. Here you can choose:

  • Offload the app, which frees up storage, but keeps the app’s documents and data.
  • Delete the app, which removes the app and its related data.

Clean up your photo library

If you’ve checked iPhone storage full as we suggested above, you already know the main space taken up by Photos. Of course, scanning your whole photo library to clean it is not a good idea. First, check out if you want to delete:

  • Duplicate photos, which can be those you download or screenshot twice
  • Similar shots (like when we take continuous photos)
  • Screenshots or videos you don’t need anymore

You can go through your library and weed out these photos and videos manually or navigate to Utilities > Duplicates in the Photo app.

Clear browser cache

The Internet browsers such as Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari, etc. usually save their browsing history after your surfing. If you use a browser frequently, thẻir files and caches will definitely take up considerable storage. To clean up the browser caches:

Go to “Settings” > Tap your frequently used browser > “Clear History and Website Data”.

Delete contents in Messages

A source of storage you might not think about is all of the attachments contained in emails, Messages, or other messaging apps. Those attachments take up good storage with high resolution.

Here’s how you can remove them:

1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages. Your attachments will be grouped by file types such as photos, videos, gifs and stickers, etc.
2. Here you choose a file type
3. Tap Edit and tick the attachments you want to delete.
4. Finally, tap the trash can in the top-right corner.

Do similar steps to the other apps with lots of attachments to free up your iPhone storage full.

Delete offline/downloaded content

You probably consume a lot of content every day — music, videos, podcasts and other documents. And if you save that content offline to be able to play it during a long flight, you have quite a lot of leftovers piled up.

Every day, you undoubtedly consume a lot of content – music, movies, podcasts, and downloading loads of documents. Over time, those might stuff offline and online to take up your storage.

As a result, apps like YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify can take up several gigabytes of iPhone storage each. To free up your mobile storage, the only thing you can do is go to every Downloads album of each and delete all of the data.
